Deputy Commissioner of Police from Aurangabad Nisar Tamboli was rushed to Jaslok Hospital on Sunday, after he collapsed near Heera Panna Shopping Centre at Haji Ali in south Mumbai, while participating in 14th edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon-2017.
Forty-seven-year-old Tambli, who is otherwise fit with no history of diabetes or hypertension, slumped on the ground all of a sudden and fell unconscious. He was running the full 42 km Mumbai marathon, when he collapsed midway to the finishing line.
After he was rushed to the nearby Jaslok Hospital, Tamboli appeared disoriented and had a short memory loss.
Apprehending a cardiac arrest, the doctors attending him admitted him at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. However, tests revealed that he had not suffered any cardiac arrest as was being feared.
Tamboli, who was earlier Mumbai police spokesperson, regained his orientation, after he was administered intravenous fluids. The doctors attending on Tamoli attributed his sudden collapse to excess dehydration caused by lack of adequate intake of water by him during the last couple of days.
"With the memory of a leading Mumbai doctor losing his life due to a heart attack whilst training for the Marathon still fresh in our minds, we have to be extremely vigilant and alert in managing all such cases,” Dr. Shoaib Padaria, senior cardiologist at Jaslok hospital, said.
“He will be under observation at the ICU for the next 24 hours,” Dr Padaria added.
Meanwhile, more than 42,000 people participated in the Mumbai Marathon and four other associate races held across the metropolis.
In a related development, Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu and Kenya’s Bornes Kitur emerged first and second in the 42 km marathon, clocking the in 2:09:32 and 2:29:02 respectively to take home first prize cheques of USD$42,000.
