Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday said the Centre is looking at possible sites in Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana for setting up atomic plants, and is considering exporting Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). “We are exploring the possibility of having such establishments in other places, for example near Dehradun in Utarakhand and near Patiala in Punjab. We are also looking for a place in Bhiwani in Haryana,” he said.
Singh said most of the atomic energy generation was confined mostly to Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. “That is one contribution that has received a lot of push in last two years,” he said at a conference on ‘Nuclear Power in India’ organised by ASSOCHAM.
Of the 22 nuclear power plants in the country, Rajasthan houses six reactors while Narora in Uttar Pradesh has two. The rest are located in western and southern India. Meanwhile, the Nuclear Power Corporation (NCPIl), is coming up with two more reactors in Rajasthan and four PHWRs in Gorakhpur in Haryana.
