Assamese will soon be made mandatory up to Class X in the State. However, if someone is not comfortable choosing the subject, he or she can have the option to choose from Bengali or Bodo as mandatory subject.
Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this on Wednesday while adding that the Government is going to bring a new legislation in the August session of the Assam legislative Assembly, which will make Assamese or Bengali or Bodo a compulsory subject upto Class X.
“States like Kerala and Karnataka already has similar legislation. We are trying to bringing the copy of the same and are going to place the new legislation before the House in the forthcoming session in August this year,” said the Minister.
He said that the legislation will enforce the language to all the schools, including those under CBSE curriculum and those under Kendriya Vidyal-
aya Sangathan (KVS). “Students in Barak Valley can opt for Bangali as mandatory subject instead of Assamese. While the rest of the students must choose one subject between Assamese or Bodo as a mandatory subject,” said the Minister.
The Minister further said that the Central Government has relaxed the existing norm of having B.Ed. or D. El.Ed. as requirement for appointment of TET qualified candidates in lower Primary (lP) and Upper Primary (UP) schools for next one year four months and 25 days. “This is going to help the TET qualified candidates in Assam to get jobs without obtaining a B.Ed. or D.El.Ed degree. There are about 19,000 TET qualified candidates in Assam as of now, but we have not been able to appoint them. According to the Right to Education Act, Government cannot appoint teachers without B.Ed. or D.El.Ed qualification," said the Minister.
