Hyderabad: Six people, including a woman, have been arrested for allegedly operating an organised financial fraud racket through mule bank accounts, with police investigating suspected links to Pakistan intelligence operatives.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police arrested the six in Guwahati between October 28 and October 30, following intelligence inputs from central agencies, including Military Intelligence at Gajraj Corps in Tezpur. The case originated from a complaint lodged with Sonitpur police.
According to a police statement, an SBI account belonging to Marjina Begum (28) received deposits amounting to several lakhs of rupees within 47 days, between June 22 and August 5, 2026. The money was withdrawn almost immediately after each deposit.
Investigators subsequently identified Mofijul Haque (22) and Himangshu Das (19), both residents of Bamunimaidan. Preliminary findings indicated a suspected connection with a Pakistan intelligence operative, police said.
The three were arrested on October 28. During their interrogation, police said, they revealed the names of other associates, leading to the arrest of Rakib Hussain (34) on October 29, followed by Iftar Hussain (25) and Arman Azuz Hoque (20) on October 30.
Police seized mobile phones, laptops, bank passbooks, ATM cards and other documents during the operation.
According to police, the syndicate had been operating across the country for around two years and is suspected of defrauding victims of several crores of rupees. The suspected mastermind is believed to be coordinating the network from outside Assam.
The STF is tracing the money trail and investigating the extent of the suspected links to Pakistan. (with inputs from media organisations)
