Assam and Meghalaya Government have decided to go all out against the Garo National liberation Army (GNlA) militants particularly in the areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
This was decided on Wednesday at a high-level security meeting in Guwahati, which was attended by representatives of Assam and Meghalaya Government, top brass of the police of States, the Army and paramilitary force. “We are going to set up a joint control room in Goalpara which can be shared by both the State Police, the Army and paramilitary forces so that they can work in close coordination and launch seamless operation against the ultras,” said Assam Home Secretary GD Tripathy.
The GNlA militants had killed seven people and injured nine others in Assam’s Golapara district last Sunday night. After the incident, the same militants on Tuesday ambushed a police party in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district and killed five policemen on the spot.
“We believe the GNlA militants are trying to disturb the forthcoming polls to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) and the setting up of the joint control room will help all the forces to work in close coordination against the militants,” Tripathy said. The GNlA militants have a strong presence along the Assam-Meghalaya border and they had been engaged in heavy extortion and kidnapping cases and people of both the States have been suffering due to their activities.
