The BJP led Government in Assam will make provision for seats in medical college in the State for students from neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Myanmar.

Assam Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said this on Wednesday while addressing the mediapersons and added that the Government has also decided to reserve some seats in the medical colleges for the students from other Northeastern States.

The Minister said that the reservation of seats for the students from Bhutan and Myanmar will help improving State’s ties with the South East Asian Countries.

At present there are six medical colleges in Assam which are in already holding classes including the Guwahati Medical College, the Assam Medical College at Dibrugarh, Silchar Medical College, Jorhat Medical College, Tezpur Medical college and Barpeta Medical College. Apart from this, the State also has a dental college only in Guwahati and there are plans to set up two more regional dental colleges at Dibrugarh and Silchar.

Besides, five other medical colleges are in pipeline—the medical college at Dhubri, lakhimpur, Diphu, Nagaon and at Nalbari. It may be mentioned here that the hospitals in Assam get patients from Bhutan.

“I will write to all the Chief Ministers of North eastern States to avail the seat in the medical colleges,” Sarma said.
