The Assam police have alerted all the districts against any misuse of social media with regard to the incident of mob lynching of two youths at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district of Assam even as the police have arrested 26 people since last night for posting objectionable substances on social media.

The social networking sites like Facebook and WhatsApp have gone abuzz with hate messages against the culprits involved in the lynching and against a particular community after the Friday’s incident forcing the security agencies to go for strict monitoring of social media and stop hate messages from being circulation.

It may be mentioned here that while police have arrested 23 persons so far from Dokmoka and adjoining areas for their involvement in gruesome killing of the two youths on Friday, 26 others have been detained from different areas of the State including Nagaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Mangaldai and Kamrup for circulating hate messages over the Friday’s incident.

“Our investigation is on in full steam. So far we have nabbed 23 for their involvement in the crime and 26 others on charges of circulating hate messages on social media,” said Additional Director General of Police (law and Order) Mukesh Agarwala.

“It is shocking to know that some young people are involved in circulating hate messages regarding the incident,” he said adding that the number of such hate messages circulation have reduced soon after police started the crackdown on offenders on social media.

Agarwala said that the situation is well under control and that adequate security has been arranged as and when required to ensure safety to all as well as to ensure that there is no retaliatory violence against the Friday’s incident. It may be mentioned here that some people have been spreading a rumour about presence of child snatcher on social media in different parts of the State. The villagers in and around Dokmoka were also been living under fear of child snatcher for past few days and lynched to death the two youth mistaking them to be child snatchers on Friday.

The Assam police have also instituted a separate cell to monitor the social media and strengthen the cyber patrolling so that the hate campaigns that goes viral on social media could be curtailed and stopped right on time.
