Assam loses Rs 6,780 lakh of the State Domestic Product (SDP) per day due to the Assam bandh in the State.
Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary informed this to the Assembly on Monday while replying to a question by BJP legislator Mrinal Saikia.
“According the indirect assessment conducted by the Economics and Statistics department of the Assam Government, a total of Rs 6,780 lakh of the SDP in the current index was lost in 2017-18 fiscal due to Assam bandh,” said the Minister.
He said that the State had witnessed 13 Assam bandhs and 16 other local bandhs this year since beginning.
Patowary further said that the Assam Government has taken up the issue of bandh seriously and accordingly prepared a draft bill titled ‘The Assam Prohibition and Prevention of Bandh Bill, 2017’. He said that under consideration of the Assam Government.
It may be mentioned here that Assam bandh is one of the favoured mode of protest in Assam. Most of the organisations in Assam who wants to agitate or demonstrate against the Government on any issue, resort to calling of Assam bandh and even bandh at district and sub division levels to air their grievances, causing immense woes to the people besides affecting the economy.
