The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Assam, on Friday announced the schedule for the Special Summary Revision of Photo Electoral Rolls, aiming to ensure error-free voters’ lists and convenient access for all electors across the State.
As part of the exercise, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated the rationalization and reorganization of polling stations following 100 per cent physical verification. Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) have been instructed to ensure that no polling station exceeds 1,200 electors without prior ECI approval.
To enhance voter convenience, polling station jurisdictions will be strictly demarcated so that electors do not have to travel more than two kilometres or cross natural barriers. Stations will preferably be located on ground floors. Special focus will be given to urban clusters, high-rise residential complexes, housing societies, and slum dwellings to set up polling booths.
District Election Officers (DEOs) will conduct physical inspections of all existing and proposed polling stations through designated senior officers. Proposals for new locations will be finalized after consulting recognized political parties and submitted to the ECI for approval. EROs will also identify and remove duplicate entries, deceased electors, and permanently shifted voters through Form 7.
According to the official schedule, the rationalization of polling stations will be completed by November 2, 2026. The integrated draft electoral rolls will be published on November 12, opening a month-long window for filing claims and objections until December 11. Claims will be disposed of by December 28, leading to the final publication of the electoral rolls on January 4, 2027.
The CEO’s office appealed to political parties and citizens to actively cooperate in strengthening the integrity of the State’s electoral process.
