A high level 8-member delegation of Assam Gan Prishad will meet Chief Minister Nitish Kumar here on Friday. The delegation will thank Nitish, also the National president of JD(U) for the party’s stand on proposed Citizenship Bill taken at its national executive meeting.
The delegation will comprise of former Assam CM Praulla Kumar Mohanta, former Union Minister Birendra Prasad Baishya, AGP president and Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, working president of AGP Keshab Mahanta, Food Minister Phani Bhushan Chaudhary, former Minister Brindaban Goswami, Ramendra Narayan and chairman of Khadi and Village Industries Kamla Kanta Kalita.
JD(U) secretary general K C Tyagi, who will also be present during the meeting, said the delegation would also invite Nitish to visit Guwahati in near future. He said the AGP and JD(U) shared a healthy relation and both parties have worked together under the leadership of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The JD(U) in its resolution on Citizenship Bill had urged the Centre that it must give serious consideration to all the contentious issues with regard to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and mitigate the concerns of the people of Assam.
It said any step which might jeopardise the social peace and communal harmony of Assam and the whole North-East region should be taken after serious consideration.
The protection of constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards provided to the people of Assam through the Assam Accord is not only in the interest of Assam but whole of the country.
