Ongoing flood situation has improved in Assam but over 7 lakh people are continued to be affected by the deluge in 17 districts of the State, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Monday.

A total of 1,102 villages in 17 districts are still submerged by the floodwater on Monday and five more people have died in last 24 hours taking the total death toll to 65 across the state in this year’s flood, the ASDMA officials said in the flood report

issued on Monday.

The officials said that close to 19,000 people are still taking shelter in 108 relief camps set up in different

districts.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today directed the DCs of all districts to ensure relief materials to all the flood hit people and asked them to start working for rebuilding the house of flood hit people as well as the embankments soon after the water level recedes.

The Chief Minister reviewed the situation at his office with top officials today and said that there is also an urgent need to repair and rebuilding the roads and bridges damaged by flood so that communication infrastructure can be restored at an early date.

He said that appropriate steps must be taken by the administration to prevent diseases from spreading and taking epidemic form in flood affected areas by holding medical camps and taking other such measures. “Farmers in the flood affected areas should also be provided quality seeds for cultivation in coordination with the District Agriculture Officers,” Sonowal directed.

He also directed the five districts Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Biswanath Chariali and Sonitpur, located close to Kaziranga national park to take stringent steps to safeguard wild animals affected by flood with close cooperation from Police and Forest Departments.
