Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma on Wednesday filed a criminal defamation case against Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi for alleging that one of her firms had participated in the North East India Festival in Singapore, where singer Zubeen Garg died.

Riniki Sarma filed the case against the Sivasagar MLA at the Kamrup Metro Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court for making ‘false and unfounded allegations that the Golden Threads of Assam had participated in a fashion show organised during the festival in Singapore”.

Besides Gogoi, a case has also been filed against the director of news portal ‘Pratibimba Live’, her lawyer Kishore Dutta said here. Dutta said Chief Minister’s wife and her company have no relation with the festival or its organiser, and they did not participate in any event organised by them. Gogoi had alleged that she participated in the fashion show even after the singer had died and the festival was officially cancelled.

“On 30th September 2025, the president of Raijor Dol , Akhil Gogoi convened one protest program on the issue of murder of Zubeen Garg. He wanted the case to be investigated by CBI and to form a Judicial committe by a sitting judge. In the said protest program Akhil Gogoi raised few false and concocted story against my client Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

“In the protest session Akhil Gogoi made some defamatory and derogatory remarks against my client Riniki Bhuyan Sarma and for that my client filed one criminal defamation case against Sri Akhil Gogoi and Director of Pratibima Live portal. My client Riniki Bhuyan and her organization Golden Threads have no any connection with Northe East Festival. My client and Golden Threads have never joined in any Fasion Show organized by the North East Festival in Singapore. Therefore my client filed criminal defamation against them which is being numbered as CR CASE NO. 502/2025 and fixed on 30.10.25,” said Riniki Sarma’s advocate Kishore Dutta.
