Dhubri: The Assam administration on Sunday launched an eviction drive in Alamganj Part-IX of Dhubri district, deploying a large police contingent and excavators to clear alleged encroachments on government land.
The operation began at 6 am, with the district administration dividing the area into sectors and assigning revenue officials to oversee the exercise. The drive targets approximately 2,850 bighas of land under the Gauripur Revenue Circle.
Nearly 90 per cent of residents had reportedly dismantled their houses and moved their belongings before the operation began. However, some families have not vacated the area after approaching the court seeking legal relief. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for November 13.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared visuals from the eviction site on social media. The operation is part of the state government's wider campaign to reclaim government and forest land from alleged encroachments.
The proposed drive had prompted anxiety among residents, some of whom said they had purchased plots from private individuals without knowing that the land belonged to the government. They also appealed to the administration to arrange alternative housing.
The administration has maintained that the land is government property and that the eviction is being carried out under the law. The court proceedings involving families who have sought relief are still pending.
