Apex court shields ex-judge who banned Jallikattu

Published on:

In a big relief to a former Supreme Court judge who pronounced the ban on Jallikattu, the apex court on Monday stayed all proceedings against him initiated by the Madras High Court after a petition alleged “judicial impropriety” against the judge for accepting an award from an animal welfare organisation that had petitioned against Jallikattu in the top court. Hearing a petition filed by retired SC judge, KS Panicker Radhakrishnan, a bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice NV Ramana issued notice to the petitioner before the HC (Salai Chakrapani) and stayed all proceedings in the case filed by him. The HC had issued notice to Justice (Retd) Radhakrishnan on January 31 this year. Chakrapani alleged that the judge acted with “bias” as he gave the judgment banning Jallikattu in May 2014 on a petition filed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals and others and a year after retiring accepted the ‘Man of the Year’ award from PETA.
