There seems to be no stopping of gang-rapes in West Bengal. In yet another incident of gang-rape inside a moving vehicle a working woman in her early twenties was allegedly abducted and raped late on Sunday inside a moving truck in Kolkata while she was returning from her job and left languishing for the whole night by the road at the heart of the city with severe injuries.
The victim who works at a South Kolkata mall allegedly took a shared taxi enroute to Howrah around 10 pm. “On the way she was pulled out of the cab and forcefully picked up into truck where she was raped by 4-5 people,” before being dumped at Babu Ghat near River Hooghly.
Curiously she was not discovered by any PCR van nor was spotted by any moving vehicle even as she lay by the road till early in the morning when she managed to reach Howrah Station, said her mother adding, “She called us up and we rushed to rescue her.”
The woman was admitted to Howrah State General Hospital. “She cannot speak very clearly as she is under sedative,” CMO Debashis Roy said. This was the fourth such rape in and around Kolkata the past fortnight. The incidents of rape have picked up in the State for the past couple of years ever since the infamous Park Street rape case hit the national headlines in February 2012.
However, unlike the way she reacted during the Park Street incident calling it a “conspiracy hatched by the CPI(M)” until a senior police officer Damyanti Sen cracked the case before being transferred to North Bengal, CM Mamata Banerjee refused to comment on Monday.
