Police on Sunday arrested Hemant, accused of attacking two Class 10 students with a chainsaw inside their classroom at a government school in Andhra Pradesh's Raptadu on October 31. He was shot after he allegedly attacked personnel attempting to apprehend him in Atmakur forest area, a senior police official said.

Anantapur Superintendent of Police Jagadeesh told PTI that the police had been searching for Hemant since Saturday. On Sunday evening, between 6 pm and 6:30 pm, they received information that he was hiding on the outskirts of the Atmakur forest area.

Following the tip-off, 15 police teams were formed, with two deployed to the forest area. When personnel approached Hemant, he was allegedly intoxicated and carrying a knife, the SP said.

Police first issued warnings and then fired shots into the air. However, Hemant allegedly continued to resist and attacked a police inspector, injuring him. Police then opened fire, Jagadeesh said, adding that around six rounds were fired, including warning shots.

Hemant, who was alone during the operation, sustained bullet injuries to the lower part of his body. The exact extent of his injuries was yet to be ascertained. He was taken to the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Anantapur for treatment.

The October 31 attack left one of the two students critically injured. She suffered the loss of her right hand, deep wounds and multiple fractures. The second girl was injured while trying to protect her classmate.

The critically injured student was first treated at Anantapur Government General Hospital before being shifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru through a green corridor for advanced treatment. Her condition was reported to be stable. (with inputs from PTI)
