Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday graced the Chandigarh Police’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations as Chief Guest at the President’s Colour Award Ceremony. The event, attended by Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria and other dignitaries, marked six decades since Chandigarh became a Union Territory and the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana on November 1, 1966.
Addressing the gathering, Shah described the President’s Colour as formal recognition of the force’s 60 years of service, dedication and sensitivity. He noted that the award is conferred on forces with more than 15 years of exemplary discipline and commitment. He said personnel who make the supreme sacrifice bring pride to both their families and the organisation they serve. From 1966 onward, he said, Chandigarh Police has tirelessly protected the city and written a golden chapter in its history.
Shah announced the induction of 141 new vehicles into the police fleet, saying the addition will significantly strengthen rapid response, intensive patrolling, mobility, technology-enabled policing, and overall modernisation. He pointed out that Chandigarh Police currently ranks second nationally in response time and is poised to claim the top position with the expanded fleet.
The Home Minister highlighted the force’s role during the years of terrorism, when Chandigarh, though regarded as one of India’s best-planned cities at the foothills of the Shivalik range, was not spared. Through valour, courage and effective governance, the police protected not only the city but the wider northern region. Working in close coordination with the Punjab and Haryana police, the more than 6,000-strong force has managed the tri-city area and set national benchmarks through its Crime Wing, Operations Cell, Security Wing, Traffic Police and PCR units.
Shah also noted the transformation of the local justice system. Once associated with prolonged delays, Chandigarh has achieved an 85 per cent conviction rate and reduced average case disposal time to 140 days. The President’s Colour, he said, honours this sustained record of service and professionalism in the northern region.
