Disruptions and repeated adjournments continued to mar the Rajya Sabha proceedings on Monday on Pegasus controversy, farm laws and price rise.
Though Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said he had allowed discussion on farmers’ issues and price rise, the Opposition did not allow the House to function. The Opposition parties insisted that the Pegasus issue should also be discussed.
The proceedings were adjourned twice in the pre-lunch session following uproar by the Opposition.
When the House met at noon after an adjournment, Deputy Chairman Harivansh proceeded with the scheduled Question Hour.
But the Opposition members continued to create a ruckus and rushed into the well of the House shouting slogans and displaying placards. Sensing the mood of the Opposition, the chair adjourned the proceedings till 2 pm.
Naidu, along with the MPs, paid homage to martyrs of the Quit India movement. The Chairman said August nine marks the 79th Anniversary of the historic day, on which Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, launched the ‘Quit India Movement’, in the year 1942.
This spirit of ‘Quit India’ should guide us to banish poverty, illiteracy, corruption, casteism, communalism, criminality in public life, inequalities, discrimination and all other forms of evils from our motherland, to fully realise the goals of freedom struggle, he said.
When Anand Sharma(Congress) pointed out that the role of the Congress in the Quit India movement did not figure in the Chairman’s observation, Naidu said he will do the needful.
