In the coming years, a common treatment will be available for all kinds of cancer patients, said Partha P Majumder, Director of National Institute of Biomedical Genomics here on Friday.
Majumder is a genetics scientist who has spent years studying human genes and believes that any form of mutation or cancer has its roots in genetics.
He was invited as a speaker for golden jubilee lecture organised by the Pt Ravishankar Shukla University where he delivered a lecture titled ‘In search of the Drivers: Excavating Cancer Genome’.
Stating that one-third cancer deaths in India are caused because of oral cancer, Majumder said tobacco in betel leaves, cigarettes, hukka etc have much more harmful effects on the body than people assume.
The chief guest of the programme was Padmashri Dr AT Dabke, former Vice-Chancellor of AYUSH and Health Sciences University, Raipur.
Dabke said tobacco use must be completely banned, especially for the teenagers and youth, as cancer caused by tobacco is killing a large number of people every year.
Dabke also mentioned about the importance of preserving the umbilical cord of babies after their birth which is a definite live-saver and a source of stem cells. Umbilical cord is used for treating cancer, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, sickle-cell anemia, immunodeficiency, marrow failure and genetic diseases that call for transplants.
Talking about preventive measures, Majumder said if exposure to stress, tobacco, poison in various forms present in the environment etc is reduced, one’s susceptibility towards cancer will be low.
