Fearing the Congress and BJP will resort to violence in the forthcoming polls, All India United Democratic front (AIUDF) has urged its workers to buy insurance policies, which will fetch them Rs 2 lakh in case of injuries and Rs 5 lakh in case of any death in the election related violence.
AIUDF leader Sirajuddin Ajmal, who represents AIUDF in the lok Sabha, has said this while addressing the party workers at Hojai in Nagaon district, sparking a debate and widespread protests in different part of the State accusing him of trying to encourage the party workers for violence.
“I told the party workers that they can go for an insurance policy by paying Rs 716 only. This insurance policy will ensure that they would get Rs 2 lakh in case their receive injuries and Rs 5 lakh to the nominee in case of death during the poll related violence,” said Ajmal, who is also the brother of the party chief and perfume trader Moulana Badaruddin Ajmal.
“There is nothing wrong in this. Our party cadres often face violence and so I have suggested the workers to opt for the insurance policy,” he said.
AIUDF spokesman Champak Kalita said that the AIUDF lok Sabha MP has urged all the party workers to go for the insurance policy as they have witnessed violence by the BJP and Congress in certain constituencies in the past.
“There is nothing wrong in what the MP says. We have witnessed lots of violence by the BJP and Congress workers in the past. In last election in 2011, one of our workers even died due to attack by the workers of rival party,” said Kalita while adding that a section of media has been trying to make an issue out of the statement of Sirajuddin Ajmal.
large gathering of people in Hojai and Barpeta on Monday protested against the statements of Sirajuddin Ajmal and said that the AIUDF MP had been trying not only to incite the AIUDF workers for violence ahead of the polls but also trying to divide the Hindus and Muslims, who had been living peacefully.
“The Government should act immediately and arrest Ajmal for trying to incite violence ahead of the polls,” said an agitating civilian in Hojai on Monday.
