AIIMS: Opp accuses Chandy of failing to stake claim

Even when Kerala’s Congress-led ruling UDF and CPI(M)-headed Opposition lDF are united in raising protests against the NDA Government at the Centre over alleged inadequacies in allotments to the State in the 2014-15 Budget, the two sides are sharply divided over why such allotments are not coming forth from New Delhi.

The State Assembly on Wednesday witnessed heated arguments between the ruling side and the Opposition on the reason for the absence of a proposal in Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s Budget speech for setting up a modern hospital on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of Delhi in Kerala.

leftist legislator PTA Raheem, who sought leave for an adjournment motion over the subject, severely criticised the Government of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for failing to request for allotment of an AIIMS to Kerala in the Union Budget when it had made the allotment to several other states. Raheem said that the Union Finance Minister had been unable to include the proposal for setting up an AIIMS in Kerala due to the delay on the part of the State Government in submitting the requisition in time. He said the State Government had not shown the required interest in the matter.
