Ahmed Patel joins anti-noise azaan chorus, backs Nigam

Political Secretary to All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Member of Parliament Ahmed Patel jumped into the controversy that erupted following the tweet of singer Sonu Nigam on disturbing sound of azaan, by saying that azaan is an essential ingredient for namaz and in today’s world of modern technology, loudspeakers aren’t. The senior Congress leader on Tuesday said this while talking to reporters in Vadodara. later on he tweeted the same.

Earlier Nigam tweeted that his sleep was being disturbed by the sound of azaan — a call to prayer by mosques.

“God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India,” the singer tweeted on Monday.

The comment from Patel came as relief for Nigam as the Congress leader backed him saying that azaan is important but not loudspeakers.

It is worth mentioning that anti-noise campaigners in Mumbai argued that noise levels from mosques touched 97 decibels, which was as loud as a drilling machine.
