Assam’s regional political party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will burn the effigy of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi across the State on Saturday for the latter’s alleged attempt to disrupt the process to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The Assam Government has recently said that it has written to the Central Government to allow citizenship to those persons who came to the State due to religious persecution in the neighbouring country. It may be mentioned here that Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had also been demanding the Central Government to include in the NRC the names of all those persons whose names appear in the electoral rolls of the 2014.
“The Congress in Assam has been trying to win the hearts of Bangladeshis in Assam and so different leaders of the party are placing various demands to incorporate the names of illegal Bangladeshis living in Assam into the NRC,” said AGP general secretary and former Minister Kamala Kanta Kalita.
