Assam’s prominent regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the powerful students’ body—All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Monday held separate protest demonstrations across the State in protest against the Congress Government’s conspiracy to hand over Assam’s land to Bangladesh, the deteriorating law and order situation and the Government’s failure to check the price rise of essential commodities.
All the district committees of the AGP staged sit-in-demonstration in all the districts headquarters on Monday from 10 am to 1 pm and shouted slogans against the Congress-led Government in the State as well as at the Centre. All the district committees also sent memorandums to Assam Governor JB Patnaik through the Deputy Commissioners over the issues.
“The Central Government has been trying to legalise the Indo-Bangla land swap deal by amending the Constitution despite opposition from us and several other parties. The incidents of killings and abduction have become a common thing in the 12-year rule of the Congress in the State. The common people are suffering due to price rise of essential commodities,” said AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
“The whole State is burning due to protests of various ethnic communities, who had been deprived of their rights and the Congress has failed to handle the issues affecting the indigenous communities of the State,” Mahanta said, adding that the AGP will, however, keep on opposing the evil designs of the ruling party.
Mahanta also warned Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government in the State to take up more agitation programmes in future to protest against such misrule and also to make the people aware about the corruptions of the ruling party.
The AASU, on the other hand, burnt the copies of the land Swap agreement between India and Bangladesh on Monday and reiterated its stand that no such deal will be accepted at any cost.
AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya said that the Congress Government has failed to address the basic problems faced by the people of the State like the price rise of the essential commodities.
“The people of Assam have clearly told the Congress Government that they are not in favour of the land swap deal and so no move will be allowed, whereby Government gives Assam’s land to the neighbouring country,” he said.
