The tremors felt in India on Tuesday were the aftershocks of the earthquake that ravaged Nepal on April 25. The epicentre of Tuesday’s earthquake was near the Chinese border, India Meteorological Department chief lS Rathore has said.
IMD scientists said the aftershocks are the results of energy transfer among the tectonic plates, hence, they may continue for weeks or even months adding that Tuesday’s earthquake was measured 7.3 on the Ritcher scale.
“Though the shocks have been felt in almost entire country, the intensity was very high in the areas along the border States, including Sikkim, Northern Bihar and North-Eastern Uttar Pradesh,” Rathore said adding that strong tremors were also felt in Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Delhi, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Uttarakhand.
At present, it is difficult to estimate the damage, the Met officials said.
Earlier, the IMD recorded the magnitude of the quake at 7.1 though the department later revised it at 7.3.
