The security situation in Afghanistan and terrorism in the region remained the focus of talks between Chief Executive Officer of Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday.

According to sources, Modi and Abdullah also discussed the role of international community to ensure peace and stability in Afghanistan and help it combat terrorism. In this regard, the upcoming quadrilateral talks involving China, United States, Pakistan and Afghanistan was also discussed in detail.

Afghanistan has been centre of constant violent attacks from Taliban and other terror groups and the country is now hoping to engage with these groups following the quadrilateral talks. In this regard, Swaraj and Abdullah held extensive discussions on the prospects of bringing terrorists groups on negotiating table.

“Sustained engagement with Afghanistan. Chief Executive Abdullah meets the Prime Minister... Promoting stronger diplomatic ties... India and Afghanistan sign agreement on visa free travel for diplomats,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

Modi also expressed “deep gratitude” towards the Afghan Government and its National Security Forces for their bravery and sacrifice displayed to protect Indians, especially during the attack on the Indian Consulate in Mazar-e-Sharif on January 4-5, 2016.

Recalling the successful visit of Modi to Kabul in December 2015, Dr Abdullah said his visit reenergised the strategic partnership between the two countries. He also appreciated the support being extended by India for infrastructure development, capacity building and defence in Afghanistan. India had given three multi-role Mi-35 helicopters to Afghanistan in December for combating terrorism in the war-torn country.

Besides seeking support for some more development projects, Dr Abdullah sought Indian support in areas of vocational training, renewable energy, public transportation and training of Afghan officials in India. The two sides agreed for visa-free travel by their diplomats. Dr Abdullah is in India to attend a conference on counter-terrorism in Jaipur.

Swaraj informed Abdullah about India’s efforts to expedite implementation of as many as 92 small developmental projects in Afghanistan that are nearing completion. She also assured Abdullah of Government’s help in facilitating participation of a strong Afghan contingent in the 12th SAF games to be held in Guwahati and Shillong.
