The AIADMK executive meet on Wednesday in Chennai said the Centre’s economic reforms and other ‘bitter pill like’ initiatives should not affect the common man. The party executive, presided by its supremo J Jayalalithaa said that the Centre’s efforts should aid people facing economic challenges, a resolution passed at the meeting said.
The party also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for constituting a Supervisory Committee to ensure initiating the height of Mullaperiyar Dam to 142 ft initially, as per the Supreme Court order.Jayalalithaa also in a letter to the Prime Minister thanked the NDA Government for constituting a Supervisory Committee for raising the water level of Mullaperiyar Dam to 142 ft initially in lines with the Supreme Court order.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said the State Government had received the orders of Union Ministry of Water Resources constituting the committee and ‘sincerely’ thanked Modi for acceding to her demand in this regard, taken up during their meeting on June 2, in Delhi.“I fervently hope that the Supervisory Committee will accomplish the task of restoration of water storage level in the Mullaperiyar dam to 142 ft initially as per the judgement and order of the Supreme Court during the current southwest monsoon period itself,” said Jayalalithaa.
Stressing that the issue of sovereignty of Katchatheevu should not be treated as “settled,” Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct officials to file a revised affidavit reflecting concerns of Tamil Nadu in the Madras High Court in a case related to the issue.
A counter affidavit filed by the External Affairs Ministry in the High Court had stated that the maritime boundary between India and Sri lanka “is a settled matter,” Jayalalithaa said. The affidavit further indicated that “Indian fishermen have no traditional fishing rights” in the area around Katchatheevu, an islet ceded by India to Sri lanka.
“I was appalled and shocked to read newspaper reports on this. Perhaps this counter affidavit had been approved by the earlier UPA Government and the matter was not brought to your personal attention,” she said in her letter.
