Two policemen were killed and several others were injured after a grenade went off accidentally at a firing range of the Assam Police in Upper Assam’s Golaghat district, police said. Police said that a total of 239 Home Guards came to Golaghat on Tuesday to participate in a training at the firing range.

However, Subedar Akon Saikia, found a half buried grenade in the ground and he went to check it. “As soon as he picked it up it exploded killing him and Deepak Saikia, a Home Guard jawan,” police said adding that several other jawans were also injured during the incident.

“All the injured personnel were admitted to the Numaligarh Refinery limited (NRl) hospital at Numaligarh,” police said. Police are, however, yet to ascertain as to how the grenade reached the firing range. “Investigation is on and we are trying to find out whether someone planted the grenade there,” a senior Golaghat police official said adding that an inquiry had already been ordered into the incident.
