CHANDIGARH: The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday released its first list of 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, renominating Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann from Dhuri and fielding a jailed minister from Ludhiana West. The list combines familiar faces with one contentious choice.

Mann will contest from Dhuri again, while Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has been named as the party's candidate from Kotkapura. The list, released by party national secretary Pankaj Kr Gupta, includes nominees from the Malwa, Majha and Doaba regions. It covers 40 of the state's 117 Assembly seats, with the remaining candidates expected to be announced in subsequent rounds.

Other prominent nominees include Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar from Amritsar South, Aman Sher Singh, better known as Shery Kalsi, from Batala, and Bram Shanker Sharma Jimpa from Hoshiarpur. Kulwant Singh has been named for SAS Nagar, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal for Ajnala, Harmeet Singh Sandhu for Tarn Taran, Daljit Singh Grewal Bhola for Ludhiana East and Ashok Prashar Pappi for Ludhiana Central.

The nomination of minister Sanjeev Arora from Ludhiana West is likely to attract the most scrutiny. The Enforcement Directorate arrested him in May in connection with an alleged money-laundering case. He remains lodged in Bhondsi jail in Gurugram, according to media reports. His inclusion comes despite his continued detention.

The case involves allegations of money laundering and fraudulent GST billing amounting to between ₹100 crore and ₹157.12 crore. It concerns Hampton Sky Realty Limited, where Arora was formerly chairman and managing director, as well as shell companies and alleged bogus exports. The AAP has rejected the allegations, describing the ED action as political vendetta by the BJP-led Centre.

The candidates were finalised at a meeting at party chief Arvind Kejriwal's residence in Delhi on Friday. Mann, Kejriwal, state in-charge Manish Sisodia and several other senior leaders attended the meeting.

This is the AAP's first list for an election in which it will seek to retain power in Punjab. The state is due to go to the polls in early 2027, and the term of its 117-member Assembly ends on March 16, 2027. The Election Commission is yet to announce the polling schedule.

The AAP currently holds 95 of the 117 Assembly seats. With opposition parties yet to announce their candidates, the first list puts the spotlight on the ruling party's choices, particularly its decision to nominate a minister who remains in custody.
