Due to snowfall experienced in the higher reaches of the Uttarakhand covering the entire Gaumukh, trek in Gangotri national park has become more challenging for visitors. Those trekking to the high altitude areas of Gangotri national park are being asked to proceed with safety equipment and guide. Due to snowfall experienced till recently, the Bhagirathi is flowing from under glacier even at Gangotri.
A trek of about 18 kilometres from Gangotri takes one to Gaumukh within the Gangotri national park. This year, snowfall was experienced in this high altitude region even in the month of April due to which it has become difficult for the average pilgrim or tourist to reach Gaumukh.
The national park ranger Pratap Singh Panwar said that the Gaumukh trek has been reconnoitred. Glaciers have to be crossed on the trek at Hamkya Nullah, Devdang and Kacchidhang. He said that so far more than 150 people including foreigners have trekked to Gaumukh and back. On Sunday 46 people had left for Gaumukh.
Considering the increased risk on the trek due to snow, the tourists are being advised to proceed with guide and porters at the time of being accorded trek permits.
