8-mth-old rape victim: SC sends medical team

Concerned over the medical condition of an eight-month old female infant who was brutally raped by her cousin at her home in Delhi, the Supreme Court on Wednesday dispatched a medical team from AIIMS to visit the girl at a North Delhi Government hospital and shift her, if needed, to AIIMS.

The court directed a team of two doctors along with an official from the Delhi legal Services Authority to visit the girl and submit a report to court by Thursday. The order came pursuant to an urgent mentioning by lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava who cited a previous judgment of the court to claim compensation for the victim and harsher punishment for the perpetrator of the crime.

Posting the matter after lunch, the Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra called for the presence of a law officer appearing for the Centre to facilitate the child’s treatment at AIIMS. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) PS Narasimha was the first to turn up followed by ASG Pinky Anand and ASG Tushar Mehta, all who responded to the call from the CJI’s court.

The court directed all three ASGs to take a considerate approach of the case as it involved the health and security of an eight month old.

“The young child requires better treatment and special care,” said the bench, allowing the medical team to take an ambulance as well to enable immediate shifting of the victim to AIIMS.
