At least five unidentified terrorists were killed in two separate gunfights in north Kashmir as Army foiled two infiltration bids on Monday.

The bids were foiled in Tangdhar Kupwara and Uri Rampur in Baramulla sectors of north Kashmir.

Army said three terrorists were killed in a gunfight in Tangdhar where an infiltration bid was foiled earlier the day.

“The Army noticed suspected movement along the line of Control in the wee hours triggering a gunfight. It led to exchange of fire that culminated on killing of three terrorists. A search operation is in progress in the area,” Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said.

In another operation, two terrorists were killed in Rampur Uri sector in Baramulla district, nearly 115 kms from Srinagar, when soldiers deployed challenged a group of terrorists trying to infiltrate into the valley.

“The infiltrators opened fire which was retaliated triggering a gunfight. Two terrorists were killed in the gunfight and two weapons were recovered. The  search operation is still in progress,” Col Kalia said.

The two terrorists were killed in Rampur Uri, days after Army killed four fidayeen,  who were planning to carry out an attack on an artillery unit in Uri sector last week. A day later the longest surviving militant was killed in the lachipora while trying to infiltrate.

A senior Army officer said that 60-70 militants were planning to infiltrate into valley from across in the Baramulla district.

General Officer Commanding of Baramulla based 19 Infantry Division, Maj Gen RP Kalita,  today said that 60-70 militants were waiting at the launch pads from Gulmarg to Nowgam.

Meanwhile, two policemen were wounded in a grenade attack at Johama Baramulla Monday evening. The grenade was lobbed at a check point when a motorcycle borne youth was asked to stop.
