After a brief lull, Tamil Nadu is experiencing yet another bout of surge in Covid-19 cases. On Friday, 5,995 new persons were diagnosed with the pandemic across the State, said a medical bulletin issued by the department of Health. The State also saw 101 persons succumbing to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

There were 53, 413 active cases of covid-19 across the State as on Friday evening. The day also saw 5,764 patients getting cured and discharged from hospitals.

The covid test centres numbering 139 across the State tested 72,423 persons on Friday proving the commitment of the Health

Department in aggressive testing and isolation of the patients afflicted with the pandemic.

The Chennai Metropolis diagnosed 1,282 new cases out of the 5,995 persons who tested positive on Friday and this has caused anguish among the policy makers and health workers. This is in stark contrast to the events of last week when the number of afflicted persons in the capital city came down to 900s for  a few days which was music to the ears of the civic officials.

Situation in Chengalpet (430) and Kancheepuram (220) were no different as the numbers were high in these two districts which are home to the State’s many industrial and educational complexes. Thiruvallur , another neighboring district tested 369 positive cases on Friday.

Coimbatore (395) , Cuddalore (242), Kanyakumari (155), Salem (269) , Vellore (200) are the other districts where normal life has come to a standstill. Aruna Giri, a hotelier and catering expert based in Vellore , who usually is in high demand during this period of the year because of his expertise with culinary delights wears a forlorn look. “No business since the outbreak of the pandemic. More than me, it is the workers I am worried about,” said Giri.
