3rd Bengal AG resigns after differences with State Govt

In a major embarrassment for the Mamata Banerjee Government both Bengal Advocate General Jayanta Mitra and Additional Advocate General laxmi Gupta resigned from their posts following “differences” with the State Government.

Mitra a barrister was the third AG to have resigned in the past six years after Anindya Mitra and Biman Chatterjee both of whom had put in their papers on similar grounds, sources said.

“Summer is round the corner and it is better to resign before the atmosphere hots up” Mitra a senior counsel said adding “let the differences of opinion prevail.” Insiders said the differences had cropped up as the State Government had repeatedly looked right through his opinions. Sources said things came to a flash when the Kolkata Police ignored his advice and blocked RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s meeting in Kolkata.

Subsequently Commissioner of Police Rajiv Kumar was personally summoned and rebuked by the High Court. Insiders said Mamata Banerjee held Mitra responsible for the discomfiture of the police.
