Despite all attempts made by rights activists and the Kalahandi district administration, thousands of animals and birds were ‘ritually’ killed at the famous Manikeswari temple here on the occasion of the traditional Chhatar Yatra, which began on Wednesday.
Around 30,000 goats and buffaloes and birds were slaughtered on either side of the road near the temple on the Durga Astami.
like every year, lakhs of devotees from various corners of Kalahandi district and other areas of the State thronged Bhawanipatna to get a glimpse of the ceremonial ‘Chhatar’ (umbrella) of the deity.
The Chhatar Yatra moved to Jenakhal, five km from the temple, in a grand procession. The Yatra was accompanied by people performing Ghumura and other traditional dances. The chorus chants created a thrilling sensation and a sense of awe and wonder among devotees.
The blood drain continued on the streets of Bhawanipatna due to the slaughter of animals. Though police forces as well as senior district officials were present to maintain law and order, they all remained silent spectators.
