Around 300 students, including 150 girls, suffered from nausea and complained of vomiting after consuming iron tablets in Government schools in several districts of Haryana on Tuesday.
The officials of the National Rural Health Mission, Haryana confirmed that Iron Folic Acid tablets were given to the students in various schools in 21 districts of Haryana as part of State Health department’s Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) campaign to combat anaemia.
CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda said there was nothing to worry about as they administered the tablets to the students when on empty stomach.
“879 children were found suffering from mild side effects such as stomach ache and mild nausea. It is just 0.054 per cent of the total students given WIFS blue tablet,” added officials.
They further added that a majority of the children did not suffer side effects like severe diarrhoea and vomiting. There was no major cause for worry as the students had minor side effects after consuming the tablets, the officials said.
Around 150 students, all of them girls, fell sick in Jind, 96 in Hisar and 50 in Sonipat, they said. Sixteen lakh children were administered the tablets in schools in 21 districts yesterday and seventy of them suffered from mild side effects and were provided proper treatment yesterday itself, officials added.
