A 30-year-old Mumbai resident delivered a set of healthy twins — a boy and girl — on board Mumbai-Visakhapatnam Express between Thane and Kalyan Raiway stations on the Central Railway on Sunday morning.

A resident of Ghatkopar’s Narayan Nagar locality in north-east Mumbai, Shaikh Salma Tabassum was travelling along with her relatives from Kurla-based lokmanya Tilak Terminus (lTT) to Secunderabad when she developed labour pains at Thane at 7.30 am. Shortly afterwards, she delivered a baby girl.

Subsequently, when the train was about reach Kalyan, Tabassum delivered a baby boy. “Both the baby girl and boy are healthy. The mother is also doing well,” a senior CR official said.

As the train reached Kalyan Railway Station, Government Railway (GRP) officials, including duty sub-inspector Nitin Gaur and two lady constables Neelam Gupta and  Surekha Kadam attended to the mother and newly-born twins.

After the delivery, the mother and her twins alighted the train at Kalyan Station.

They were later taken in an ambulance to nearby Rukmanibai Hospital for post-delivery care.
