3-day Assembly session starts today in Gujarat

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is all set to attend Monsoon Session of the Gujarat Assembly from Monday. In the brief three-day session, controversial Gujarat lokayukta Commission Bill 2013 is likely to be tabled for discussion again after Governor Kamla Beniwal returned it with stern remarks.

The Gujarat lokayukta Bill was passed during the Budget Session on April 2, 2013 amid strong objection from the Opposition Congress. However, the Gujarat Governor not only rejected the Bill but also returned it with her comments. She remarked that the Bill would reduce the position of lokayukta to a ‘caged parrot’ and termed it a ‘mockery of judiciary’.

Meanwhile, after Justice RA Mehta refused to take charge as Gujarat lokayukta, the State Government has initiated the process for fresh appointment as per the existing Bill passed in 1986. The Government also suggested three names and sent it to leader of Opposition Shankersinh Vaghela as well as the Governor.

However, Vaghela rejected the proposal and asked the Government for other names. “If the lokayukta Bill would be tabled for discussion, the Congress would stick to its stand and oppose it again,” said Vaghela, when contacted by The Pioneer. Apart from lokayukta Bill, Gujarat State School Commission Bill 2013 is also likely to be tabled during the Monsoon Session. It was also returned by the Governor.

Sources said that the BJP would bring a resolution to congratulate the Chief Minister for his elevation as the party’s prime ministerial candidate. On the first day, the Assembly will pay tribute to Kishor Vankawala and Fakirbhai Vaghela who passed away during their tenure as MlA in the present Assembly.

Even during the Monsoon Session, Modi would address an event at Mumbai organised by All India Advertising Association on Monday. He is expected to remain in the House on Tuesday. However, on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti), he would visit Porbandar to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The session is concluding on Thursday and important discussions on both the Bills are likely to be carried out.
