A year after completing Court of Inquiry (CoI) a military court has convicted three senior Major rank Army officers for their direct involvement in triggering a clash between jawans and officers after they assaulted a jawan and denied him medical treatment in an artillery regiment at Nyoma in southeastern ladakh in May 2012.
Three officers, including the CO, and eight jawans of 226 Field Regiment were injured in the violent clashes on May 10, 2012. A day after the incident, the Army had ordered a CoI in which 215 witnesses including five officers, 21 JCOs and 189 jawans were examined.
According to official sources, "three officers identified as Major Ankur Tiwari, Major Kapil Malik and Major SK Sharma have been awarded five-year loss of seniority for the purpose of promotion, four-year loss of service for the purpose of pension and a severe reprimand by a summary general court martial that concluded in Akhnoor last week". The General court martial followed after an Army Court of Inquiry had recommended disciplinary action against 168 personnel from the 226 Field regiment including four officers, 17 junior commissioned officers and 147 jawans in March 2013.
