The CBI is likely to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court on Friday and may claim that its director Ranjit Sinha did not favour any coporate or those accused in the 2G scam despite meeting them several times at his official residence.
The SC has directed the CBI Director to file an affidavit by Monday on the averments made by an NGO claiming that the entry register at Sinha’s residence suggested that he met the accused persons in the 2G case and sought to favour them in the case. When asked by reporters, Sinha said, “We are supposed to file an affidavit by Monday and we will be filing it.”
He did not answer questions on what position will the CBI maintain in the affidavit on the issue of authenticity of the visitors’ register and the number of meetings with the corporates representing the accused companies in the 2G scam, Sinha declined to comment saying the matter is subjudice.
On a question if the affidavit will be filed by him in his personal capacity or the agency will file it on his behalf, he said, “Where does the question arise, I am the CBI Director…and it will be filed accordingly.”Sinha has not denied the meetings per se but has disputed reports on the frequency of such rendezvous with those representing companies accused in the spectrum scam. He has also claimed that he did not favour any controversial person he has met at his residence.
Stating that the averments made in the petition against him were serious, the apex court had earlier directed the CBI Director to file an affidavit within a week.Meanwhile, the agency is tracking the movements of the officers and men involved in his security detail and their CDR is being scanned to find out those behind the leak of the reception register maintained at his official residence here. The agency has begun a discreet enquiry to find out those who passed on the register/contents to private persons. A number of security personnel have been examined by the Special Crimes Unit of the agency on the issue.
