2027 UP polls: Mayawati targets SP, BJP, Congress

Amid escalating political efforts to woo Dalit voters ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati launched a scathing attack on her political rivals on Sunday. She accused the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress of failing to be genuine allies of the Dalit-Bahujan community, citing deep-rooted flaws in their policies and intent.

The sharp remarks from the BSP supremo came a day after SP president Akhilesh Yadav met Agra MP Ramjilal Suman, who recently stirred controversy in the Rajya Sabha over his remarks on historical figure Rana Sanga. The visit was seen as part of Yadav’s ongoing effort to fine-tune his PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula - an inclusive caste-minority strategy for 2027. Meanwhile, the BJP has been actively organising outreach programs from April 14 to 25 to commemorate Ambedkar Jayanti, while the Congress is also stepping up its efforts to secure Dalit support. Chandrashekhar Azad’s Bhim Army, which has a strong Dalit following, continues its ground-level mobilization.

Against this backdrop, Mayawati took to social media platform ‘X’ on Sunday, posting four successive messages where she strongly criticized her political opponents. She accused them of perpetuating casteism and marginalising Dalits despite public posturing.

“Like Congress and BJP, the SP too has shown no real intent or willpower to ensure the upliftment of Dalits and Bahujans by granting them their constitutional rights,” Mayawati wrote. “They lack sympathy and commitment to end poverty, caste-based exploitation, and injustice.”

In a particularly pointed reference, she recalled the infamous 1995 State Guest House incident, where she was allegedly attacked by SP workers, calling it an “unforgivable act.”

“The SP’s betrayal of the BSP, the murderous attack on its leadership on June 2, 1995, the tearing of the promotion reservation bill in Parliament, and the renaming of districts, parks, and institutions established in honour of Dalit icons-all these are examples of its extreme casteist mindset,” she wrote.

Mayawati claimed the BSP has made consistent efforts to dismantle the caste system and build a more egalitarian society, while accusing the SP of actively trying to derail these efforts for political gain.

In her final post, she declared: “It is clear that, like the Congress and BJP, the SP can never be a true well-wisher of the Dalit-Bahujan community. Their actions are driven by vote-bank politics, while the

BSP remains dedicated to empowering the Bahujans and making them the ruling class.”

Mayawati’s renewed offensive signals the BSP’s intent to reclaim its traditional Dalit support base, which has increasingly fragmented amid rising competition from other political forces ahead of the 2027 elections.
