SC OK’s bigger warning on cigarette covers

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Government to increase the size of pictorial warnings on cigarette covers from the present 40 per cent to 85 per cent. The decision of the Union Health Ministry got stuck after the Karnataka High Court stayed the Government’s decision for want of empirical data to suggest that increased size of pictorial warning impacted sale of cigarettes. Attorney General KK Venugopal appearing for Centre sought stay of HC order dated December 15, 2017 claiming that the decision was taken to protect the health interest of millions of citizens. The Court factored this reason for ordering stay and listed petitions filed by Centre and NGO Health for Millions on March 12.
