SC concerned over ill treatment of dogs

New Delhi: “A faithful dog is a faithful friend.” This is how the Supreme Court remarked on Monday as it questioned the authority of municipal bodies to pick up dogs off the street and eliminate them on the pretext that they are a public nuisance. While dog-lovers have assailed such authority of municipal bodies, a Bench comprising justices Dipak Misra and PC Pant also echoed similar concern when, during the hearing, one of the judges observed that “Man’s best friend is a dog”.

Wagah Beating Retreat is ugly, says Yashwant

New Delhi: Former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha on Monday termed the Beating the Retreat ceremony at Wagah on the India-Pakistan border as “ugly” and questioned its continuance since 1959. “We have that ugly ceremony at Wagah, almost vulgar, I don’t know why we are continuing it but we are,” said the senior BJP leader, who also held the portfolio of Finance in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government.

‘Sacking not good word after 42 yrs of service’

New Delhi: Former DRDO chief Avinash Chander, whose tenure was abruptly curtailed, feels that the matter could have been handled better by the Government as sacking is not a “good word” to hear after 42 years of service. After demitting office on January 31, Chander said he came to know only from the media about the government order last month removing him as the country’s top military technocrat.
