SC tells Centre to amend Air Force Act
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has recommended the Centre to consider amending the Air Force Act to enable setting off the pre-trial detention of a solider against the jail term awarded by the General Court Martial. While such amendments are already present in the Army and Navy Acts, a bench of Justices BS Chauhan and Dipak Misra felt that a similar provision should be inserted in the Air Force Act as well to avoid hardships faced by persons convicted by court-martial. Under the existing law, the period of sentence commenced from the date when the original proceeding was signed by the Presiding Officer.
Army Chief to visit France for five days
New Delhi: Seeking to strengthen bilateral defence ties, Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh would be on a five-day visit to France starting Sunday. The Army Chief would be on a five-day visit to France starting May 26 and will discuss ways of strengthening defence ties between the armed forces of the two sides, Army officials said.
Anil lad resigns as Rajya Sabha member
New Delhi: Anil lad, a Congress leader, has resigned as member of the Rajya Sabha following his election to the Karnataka State Assembly. The resignation of lad has been accepted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari with effect from May 20.
