Parag Sawant, the last survivor of the 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts, died at PD Hinduja Hospital here on Tuesday after having been in comatose condition for close to nine years.

Thirty-six year-old Sawant, who had been admitted with severe head injuries to the PD Hinduja Hospital a day after the serial blasts on Mumbai’s running suburban trains on July 11, 2006, breathed his last at 6.54 am.

“He was in deep coma for the first two years. After coming out of coma in 2008, among the first few words that he uttered was ‘aai’ (mother). Though his condition improved marginally, he remained in semi-conscious state since then. He had gone through multiple operations for brain treatment and then was on supportive care and physiotherapy for few years,” Dr BK Misra, Consultant Neurosurgeon, PD Hinduja Hospital, said.

“He suffered cardio respiratory arrest. In spite of all resuscitation measures, Parag could not be revived and was declared dead at 6.54 am today. His condition might have deteriorated all of a sudden because of pulmonary embolism,” Misra said.

Sawant ( then 27 year old), an assistant sales manager with a private firm, was travelling in a Virar-bound suburban train to his residence when an explosive ripped apart a compartment of the suburban local between Mira Road and Bhayander stations in the neighbouring Thane district.

Sawant, who had suffered extensive head injuries and brain trauma and was rushed to the Bhakti Vedanta Hospital in Mira Road before being shifted to Hinduja Hospital at Mahim in south Mumbai, where he was in a vegetative state for the last nine years.
