More than 200 sanitation workers were detained on Tuesday by Ahmedabad police for blocking Ashram Road, main artery of the city while they were protesting in support of their demands to make them permanent.
“We had over 100-150 policemen at the venue and have detained 200 people. One woman fell unconscious but whether she collapsed due to heat or some other reason, we will get to know after medical report is available,” said police. Meanwhile, a group of almost thousand protestors zeroed in on the Income-Tax cross-roads bringing traffic to halt for over an hour on Tuesday morning.
The sanitation workers in the city have been on strike for over 50 days seeking better pay and that they should be made permanent in their jobs, instead of prevalent contract system that gives them fixed pay for years. This strike by sanitation workers could not have come at worse times for Ahmedabad that is witnessing a spate of cases of dengue, malaria and chikungunia.
