The Centre has shortlisted names for appointment of Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), a post which has been lying vacant since August this year. But with a petition pending in the Supreme Court where a challenge has been made to the selection criteria adopted for CVC appointment, the Centre is unable to proceed further.

On Wednesday, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi approached the apex court with a request to list the PIl pending against CVC appointment next week in order to facilitate the Government to fill the post of the country’s top vigilance officer.

The Bench headed by Chief Justice Hl Dattu posted the petition filed by Centre for Integrity, Governance and Training in Vigilance Administration on December 11 allowing the Centre to present its case on the new appointment.

Rohatgi informed the court that about 20 officers have been shortlisted for the post. He did not disclose other details. The Centre, which has so far appointed bureaucrats to the post of CVC was attacked by the petitioner NGO for not adopting transparent method to appoint vigilance commissioners. The PIl stated that persons eligible for CVC post should have a minimum number of years of experience in dealing with vigilance cases. It further demanded that applications must be invited from eligible candidates.
