2 held for Ranaghat nun's gangrape

The CID had managed to arrest two persons in connections with the Ranaghat gang-rape case of an elderly nun of a Christian missionary school.
Salim Sheikh, a Bangladeshi national, who was earlier picked up from Mumbai with the help of Mumbai Crime Branch, later confessed to the CID that he was involved in the March 14 incident, a senior official said.
Salim, who has several criminal charges against him and who had been sneaking into India since 2003 before returning to Bangladesh after committing crimes like dacoity, was on Thursday produced before a Ranaghat court and remanded to CID custody, the local public prosecutor said. The Ranaghat case had hit national headlines particularly after the police failed to arrest the culprits despite the release of CCTV footage.
“We managed to catch him after activating some key links at the border and following the mobile tower locations” a police officer said. Following leads the police also arrested Gopal Sarkar a resident of Habra who had infiltrated into India a few years ago. Sarkar was arrested for providing shelter to Sheikh and his accomplices.
“It is not known whether the other culprits have sneaked back into Bangladesh or not but we are looking into all angles and things will be clear only after we have interrogated this man” officials said adding Sheikh was brought to CID headquarters at Bhawani Bhavan in Kolkata on Thursday evening.
