Two persons were killed and at least a dozen cars were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at a Maruti Suzuki showroom at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai on Sunday morning.

After the thick layers of smoke began emanating from the ground floor of the seven-storey Aditya Planet residential building, locals alerted the fire brigade personnel.

Before the fire brigade personnel rushed to the scene, the fire spread to the basement and ground floor of the residential building, which also has commercial premises. The building is located on the Sion-Panvel Highway.

The fire brigade personnel battled with the blaze for more than three hours, before they extinguished it.

Krishna Kumar and Jitendra Kumar, a security and a showroom boy, who were trapped inside the showroom, died of suffocation.

At least a dozen brand new cars were gutted in the fire.

During the course of their operation, the fire brigade personnel evacuated all residents in the building.

While the cause of fire has not been established yet, the fire brigade personnel are trying to ascertain whether the building had requisite alarm and fire fighting systems in place and whether it had done fire audit in the recent past.
