A two-day dance drama based on the life of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who is called the father of modern Indian society, is being organized from November 6 at Kartavya Path and India Gate (Central Vista) under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava celebrations. It is part of the one-year-long celebrations launched by the Union Ministry of Culture on May 22 on the occasion of the 250th birth anniversary of the great visionary.
Titled ``Yugpurush Raja Ram Mohan Roy", the program is based on the theme 'Nari Samman', which is being organised by Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation.
This audio-visual presentation is also a part of a campaign under which cultural programmes are to be organised at Central Vista every week. Directed by well-known choreographer Neelay Sengupta, the presentation will include 40 artists.
The dance drama based on the life of Raja Ram Mohan Roy will familiarise the audience with his great works, high ideals and philosophy of life closely. The performance will begin at 6.00pm and admission to this program is completely free for all.
During the celebration year, a string of events have been held and are in the pipeline. An iconic statue of Raja Ram Mohan Roy was unveiled by the Union Culture Minister Kishan Reddy in virtual mode at the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata in May.
The West Bengal Government has also declared the historical building where the social reformer used to stay at Raghunathpur in Khanakul as state heritage.
It has been a long-standing demand of locals to recognise and declare state heritage the birth place and residence of Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
Born on May 22, 1772 in Radhanagar, Bengal, Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a well-learned and multi-linguistic man. Known as a revolutionary who brought the much-needed reforms in the religious practices, education system, and society of his time, his diligent contributions have played a vital role in shaping and nurturing modern India.
